Rijal al Kashi: A Twelver Shi'ite Work of Biographical Evaluation
Rijal al Kashi (Arabic: ØØØÙ ØÙÚÙØÙÙ) is a book that contains biographies of early transmitters of hadith and other historical figures who knew the Shi'ite Imams. It is one of the four main books of Shi'ite biographical evaluation (Êilm al-rijÄl) that are regarded as authoritative in Twelver Shi'ism.

The book was originally written by Muhammad ibn Umar al-Kashshi (c. 854â941/951), a prominent Shi'ite scholar and hadith narrator. However, his original work is now lost and only an abridged version by Shaykh Tusi (995â1067 CE) is available. Shaykh Tusi claimed that he abridged al-Kashshi's work because it contained many errors and unreliable narrations.
The abridged work as extant today contains 1115 hadiths and refers to 515 companions of the Shi'ite Imams. The biographies are organized according to the central Muslim figures to whom the subjects of the biographies were companions, starting from the companions of the prophet Muhammad and ending with the companions of Hasan al-Askari (the 11th Imam according to Twelver Shia tradition) and some of the scholars from the time of the Minor Occultation.
The book is also known as Ikhtiyar ma'rifat al-rijal (Arabic: ØØتÛØØ Ù ØØÙØ ØÙØØØÙ), meaning "The Selection of the Knowledge of the Men", or Ma'rifat al-naqilin (Arabic: Ù ØØÙØ ØÙÙØÙÙÛÙ), meaning "The Knowledge of Those Who Transmitted from the Sincere Imams".
The book is a valuable source for studying the history and doctrine of Shi'ism, as well as the reliability and credibility of hadith narrators. It also provides insights into the social and political conditions of the early Shi'ite community and its interactions with other Muslim sects.
